Oscar De La Hoya Expresses Approval of Derrick James Training Ryan Garcia
As of late, Golden Boy Promotions founder Oscar De La Hoya and super lightweight boxer “King” Ryan Garcia (23-1, 19 KO’s) have been bumping heads. Where De La Hoya feels his company has been doing a masterful job, his charge Garcia, has felt slighted. This internal feud has even spilled into the public light again. Despite this discord, De La Hoya recently praised King Ryan on his decision to switch from chief second Joe Goosen to Derrick James.
The Golden Boy Promotions founder shared his sentiments with Fight Hub TV:
“I think he made the right choice, I think he [Derrick James] is an excellent trainer . . . my best trainer was Floyd Mayweather Senior because he would literally wake me up at 5 AM in the morning to go run. When I didn’t want to wake up, he would throw buckets of water on me when I was lazy.”
TRUTH OR POLITICS?
While theoretically it’s good to hear that De La Hoya approves of the coach swap, it’s hard to believe that he is not somewhat worried. This is due to Derrick James also training undisputed super welterweight champion Jermell Charlo and unified welterweight champion Errol Spence Jr. The reason that this could be perplexing is because they both fight under the Premier Boxing Champions [PBC] banner.
When PBC initially launched, they lured a huge chunk of the Golden Boy Promotions roster to jump ship and join their ranks. De La Hoya has held a grudge to this very day about this transaction. So to hear that the biggest fighter in his current stable is essentially getting into bed with the enemy can’t fill Osar De La Hoya with joy, no matter what he says. Clearly there is a great deal of activity bubbling behind the scenes, so stay tuned to 3Kings Boxing to keep abreast of the new developments in real time.
