Derrick James Preparing Errol Spence for a Tough Out Against Yordenis Ugas

On April 16, we get to see two 147-pound champions square off in a high-stakes unification clash. WBC and IBF champion Errol “The Truth” Spence (27-0, 21KOs) will take on WBA champion Yordenis “54 Milagros” Ugas (27-4, 12KOs). This fight is filled with intrigue, not solely because of the fighters, but also because of the two head trainers.

Derrick James, the long-time trainer of Spence, is one of boxing’s best today. He has the responsibility of getting Spence fully prepared for a very dangerous and versatile Ugas.

He told 3Kings Boxing the following about his message for Spence when it comes to how dangerous a threat Ugas truly is:

“Hey man, he’s gotta bring out the best in you because Ugas is very versatile, first and foremost. He’s aggressive, he’s a versatile fighter, but he’s also a counterpuncher. So, you [Errol Spence] have to be on your situation.”

It’s no secret how much of a threat Ugas is. His overall skillset, combined with his newfound confidence and Spence’s inactivity are the ingredients for an upset. However, with James leading the charge and Spence already having the mentality of never overlooking an opponent, Ugas shouldn’t bank on facing a distracted or overconfident Spence.

With Ismael Salas, also one of boxing’s best trainers, leading Ugas, not only will this be a battle of fighters in the ring, but also trainers outside of it. April 16 surely can’t get here fast enough!
