The Triangle Social Media Squabble: Gervonta Davis, Tevin Farmer and Devin Haney!
For those that once questioned if social media was good or bad for boxing, halt right there before answering cause yet again another beef has just hit the fan.
This time it involves two world champions and one former world champion all of whom have history and it just got even more personal.
WBC lightweight champion Devin “The Dream” Haney (23-0, 15ko), took to social media issuing a challenge to one of the division’s newest top competitor.
Former two-time junior lightweight champion Gervonta “Tank” Davis (22-0, 21ko), who reportedly will be fighting for the WBA “regular” lightweight title against former two-time featherweight champion Yuriorkis Gamboa in December.
The Baltimore native quickly responded like a focused pitbull with some facts and even a personal shot.
It’s worth pointing out that although Davis is correct, many inside the boxing community do frown upon fighting for the WBA regular title as a cheap way of being viewed as a world champion.
Now in boxing which is similar to life, there are words that can be used that can trigger an immediate reaction of attack.
Fighters have made it clear, say what you want but leave family out of it. Therefore, the latter tweet obviously didn’t rest easy with the WBC champ as he gave a straight-forward response and even gave a time frame.
However the hits keep coming as IBF Junior lightweight champion Tevin “American Idol” Farmer (30-4-1, 6ko), added his two cents, making the already hot flame into a scorching blaze.
It’s worth pointing out the error in what the IBF champion implied.
Tank wasn’t elevated, however, when lost the IBF belt on the scale against Francisco Fonseca back in 2017, the WBA made an audacious move. They went on to allow Davis to fight for the Super title instead of elevating then regular champion Alberto Machado.
Nonetheless, shoots have been fired in rapid succession and the point was definitely received.
THE HISTORY BEHIND THIS ALL
As previously mentioned in the beginning, the hard punching former two-time champion has a long standing beef with both counterparts.
Back in 2017 tempers flared between the Baltimore knockout artist and the WBC champion over sparring beef that quickly escalated. Both men shot harsh accusations towards each other.
The ultimate point was when renowned trainer Floyd Mayweather Sr. confirmed that Haney got the best of the exchange.
Farmer, probably has the most right to really be upset and understandable so hence how long his fued with Davis has been going on. It without a doubt has been the longest reigning beef on social media.
The Philadelphia boxer has been wanting a piece of the former champion badly and even holds the very same title that once belonged to his arch rival.
Furthermore, just when it looked like the conclusion to this soap opera was going to end with both men in the ring, Davis jumped up to lightweight in a sudden move.
WILL THEY FIGHT IN 2020
Now as exciting as all this may sound, lets get back to the question asked at previously.
Is social media good or bad for boxing?
Whether it is or isn’t, at least it provides plenty of entertainment for future fights.
It’s unclear if any of this turns into an actual scheduled bout, however, watching this play out live is like being at a old kung fu movie waiting for the explosive fighters to face each other in a climatic conclusion!
