Nonito Donaire vs Alexandro Santiago Gets Upgraded!
When originally scheduled, bantamweights Nonito “The Filipino Flash” Donaire (42-7, 28 KO’s) and Alexandro “Peque” Santiago (27-3-5, 14 KO’s) were going to clash on July 15. Now, the championship bout has been added to the extremely high profile Errol Spence Jr vs Terence Crawford under-card on July 29. Naturally, both pugilists should be pleased with the upgraded alteration.
As 3Kings Boxing previously reported, Donaire and Santiahgo will compete for the vacant WBC bantamweight title. Back in January, then-undisputed bantamweight champion Naoya Inoue opted to vacate all his titles and move up to super bantamweight. Inoue is currently scheduled to face Stephen Fulton on July 25.
WHAT THINGS MAY COME
While Santiago (27) is no spring chicken, he totes eleven fewer years in youth than Donaire. So, the main question going into July 29 is how much does the four-division champion have left in the tank? In his last bout versus the previously mentioned Inoue, The Filipino Flash (40), submitted a notably soggier performance than in their first encounter two years prior. Yet, with a little more than a year to rest, it will be interesting to see what version of the future Hall of Fame inductee comes to the ring.
To date, the gritty Santiago has yet to capture a world title despite challenging Jerwin Ancajas for his IBF super flyweight strap back on September 28, 2019. In that affair, the two bruisers fought to a twelve round split decision draw. Ranked #4 by the WBC, Peque hopes to change his luck and secure the vacant belt for himself. Regardless of who prevails in this high stakes encounter 3Kings Boxing will be here to report the news!
