Eddie Hearn Targets End of Year for Sunny Edwards vs Jesse Rodriguez

IBF flyweight champion Sunny “Showtime” Edwards (19-0, 4KO) wants to unify with any of the champions in the division. According to Matchroom Boxing promoter Eddie Hearn, the talented IBF champion and WBO champion Jesse “Bam” Rodriguez (18-0, 11KO) could fight by the end of the year.

Boxing fans were excited to learn that Edwards had signed on to fight the WBO champion. Yet, the fight was put on ice following an injury suffered by Rodriguez against Cristian Gonzalez for the vacant WBO title on April 9.

UNIFICATION IS A MUST

While speaking with Boxing Social, the always-vocal British promoter revealed a time frame for when fans can expect to see the fight.

“We’re negotiating with him at the moment, and I do expect to make that fight in November or December.”

Hearn also revealed that Showtime has signed on to fight any of the champions. Furthermore, his main focus is to make sure the next fight for Edwards will be a unification.

“Sunny signed a contract for all those fights. For the money and everything. So, he’s in . . . so it’s really down to Rodriguez, [WBC champion Cesar] Martinez, and [WBA champion Artem] Dalakian. It has to be one of them next.”

On March 31, Edwards helped open the door for a unification to take place by joining both Martinez and Rodriguez under the Matchroom promotional banner. With so much riding on the line, boxing fans can expect him to put on a masterclass performance in the upcoming title defense against Andres Campos on June 10.
