Berlanga Plans To Make Canelo Earn His Respect!

On Saturday, September 14, massive underdog Edgar “The Chosen One” Berlanga (22-0 17 KO’s) will get his shot at unified super middleweight champion Saul “Canelo” Alvarez (61-2-2, 39 KO’s). Despite the stark discrepancy in professional experience, and occupying the highest levels of visibility in the sport, Berlanga has openly stated that he is approaching this fight with a bold and blatant disregard for the Mexican champion.

When fulfilling his media Q&A obligations at the fight-week proceedings, The Chosen One doubled down on his claims and beliefs.

“He’s a diva, so he is going to feel like he just wants people to respect him. And at the end of the day, I am a fighter and I don’t respect nobody as far as if we [are] fighting in that ring. No, I don’t got no respect. He got to understand that. He supposed to be a legend, right? But how can you respect a guy that is trying to hurt you?”

CRAZY LIKE A FOX OR JUST CRAZY?

From the outside looking in, Berlanga has a remarkably slim shot of victory. Most are giving him the standard “puncher’s chance” as his best avenue of success. However, one must take into consideration that Canelo has one of the best beards in the sport. This is heightened by the fact that since Berlanga’s opposition level has increased, his penchant for notching knockout wins have all but evaporated. Barring his very last match, The Chosen One went on a five-fight, three-year drought as far as stoppages were concerned.

Given the previously highlighted disparity in their individual professional experience, one would think Canelo’s skillset and in-ring acumen should demand some respect. Sure, Berlanga should not be in awe of Canelo, or kowtow to him. That goes without question. Yet, charging into the ring with this self-assigned mission to stop Canelo in the sixth all while lacking a substantial sense of respect could be the perfect formula for disaster.

In the end however, perhaps it is The Chosen One who will get the last laugh. Luckily for fight fans, this duel is right around the corner and all speculation will be put to bed!
