Egis Klimas Shuns Shakur Stevenson For Gervonta Davis

IBF lightweight champion Vasyl “Hi-Tech” Lomachenko’s manager Egis Klimas prefers Hi-Tech to fight WBA champion Gervonta “Tank” Davis over WBC champion Shakur “Fearless” Stevenson.

Lomachenko (18-3, 12KO) was supposed to fight Davis (30-0-1, 28KO), but he opted to take some time off instead. The word inside the boxing circle was that he was on the verge of retiring.

Before Lomachenko stepped away from the sport, Stevenson (23-0, 11KO) wanted a crack at the Ukrainian. It seems as though Hi-Tech could be looking to return to the sport, and they could revisit a fight with Tank.

WHY IT’S THE BETTER FIGHT

During an interview with YSM Sports Media, Klimas explained why fighting Davis is better than facing Fearless.

“I’m not going to take anything from Shakur. Shakur is an excellent fighter, but he’s a bumper. He goes into a shell … He runs away. Tank comes to fight, more interesting fight, much more intriguing fight.”

Facing Davis is better financially. In addition, pundits would like to see if Lomachenko can handle the WBA champion’s power. Klimas is correct stylistically it’s a more intriguing fight. It’s the classic tale of boxer vs puncher.

Although Davis has solid boxing ability, it’s still not on the same level as the IBF champions. Yet, facing Stevenson is a different fight altogether because of his defensive prowess. Fearless high ring IQ and defensive prowess present more of a challenge for Lomachenko.

Davis is coming off a draw against WBA junior lightweight champion Lamont Roach Jr. Several fans inside the boxing community feel he should have taken a loss. In this author’s opinion, Tank’s poor performance has team Lomachenko probably feeling Davis is ripe for the pickens.
