Ekow Essuman Ready for Title Fights with Romero and Norman Jr.

When last plying his fistic trade, welterweight boxer Ekow “The Engine” Essuman (22-1, 8 KO’s) upset former super lightweight champion Josh Taylor. Along with the win, the UK pugilist picked up the vacant WBO global welterweight title to complement his #4 (WBO) and #14 (WBA) rankings. Now armed with the secondary title, Essuman is in excellent position to challenge some significant players like Brian “The Assassin II” Norman Jr. and Rolando “Rolly” Romero.

Within the WBO rankings, there is the champ, Norman Jr. (27-0, 21 KO’s), and #1 ranked Alexis “Lex” Rocha (25-2-1, 16 KO’s). Norman presently has a June 19 overseas dance date with Jin Sasaki in his native Japan. That match’s winner would be the best option that the sanctioning body has to offer.

Top contender Rocha is coming off a December 14, 2024 majority decision draw with Raul Curiel. However, Lex suffered notable damage in that scrap. So, we’ll have to see how long that delays his return to the ring.

LOOKING FOR ROMERO

If looking to flex his muscle with the WBA, The Engine still has a good deal of optimistic and realistic options. There are WBA champions Jaron “Boots” Ennis (34-0, 30 KO’s) and Romero (17-2, 13 KO’s). Both are coming off very successful outings.

On April 12, Boots took Eimantas Stanionis to task and stopped him in the sixth. Then, on May 2, Rolly stunned the world when he upset Ryan Garcia. The victory effectively busted up the highly anticipated rematch between Garcia and his archrival Devin Haney. Honestly speaking, Essuman doesn’t have a high probability of jumping on Ennis’s radar. Romero, on the other hand, may see value in this pairing. In either case, both Romero and Ennis will be in need of opposition sooner rather than later.

Let’s wait and see what Team Essuman can flip this win into next.
