Elijah Pierce Too Quick and Slick Against Veteran Jose Sanmartin
Fighting at the Overtime Elite Arena in Atlanta, Georgia, home area product Elijah Pierce (20-2, 16 KOs) used his slick skills and precise punching to score a unanimous decision (97-93, 97-93, 99-91) victory over Jose Sanmartin (35-9-1, 21 KOs).
Facing an opponent who applied pressure from the opening bell, Pierce did an excellent job of varying his plan of attack. There were moments when he used his jab and foot movement to box on the outside. Then he would switch things up, stand in the pocket, and display some excellent infighting ability – landing with hooks and uppercuts to the body.
At times, Pierce got defensively lazy. However, there was never a moment when the Georgia native did not seem in control. It was a solid performance from Pierce. Ranked third by the WBA at 122 pounds, he would love a shot at either the undisputed junior featherweight champion, Naoya Inoue, or a fight at featherweight against the one-time unified champion at 122, Stephen Fulton.
