Ellis Remains Unbeaten With UD

Boston native uses speed advantage to keep his “0”

Friday night at the Oasis Arena in Cancun, Mexico, welterweight contender Rashidi “Speedy” Ellis, of Boston, earned a workmanlike ten round unanimous decision against the rugged Panamanian Alberto Mosquera. The bout headlined the Golden Boy on ESPN card.

There was an apparent difference in natural talent in Ellis’ favor as he was able to use his significant speed advantage to control the bout at times. To Mosquera’s credit he never seemed to let the speed discourage him as he has kept steady pressure on Ellis as the fight wore on. Mosquera did have some moments of success on the inside but it simply wasn’t enough.

Ellis was deducted a point for a low blow in the ninth round. The fight appeared to be a little closer than the final scorecards (97-92, 98-91, 98-91) indicated but in the it was a clear win for Ellis as he moved to 20-0 with 13KO’s while Mosquera picked up his third career loss to fall to 25-3-2.

“It was an awkward fight, and Mosquera is a tricky fighter who knows how to fight body-to-body. I had no doubts about my victory, and I also credit my speed for getting me the win. Now it’s time to rest and to see the good decisions my promoter has to make regarding my future.” said Ellis following the bout.

Ellis also thanked his promoter, Golden Boy as well as Cancun Boxing.

In earlier action super bantamweight Francisco “Panchito” Horta (17-3-1, 10 KOs) scored an eight round unanimous decision over a very game David Reyes (17-5-1, 6 KOs). Good action fight. Reyes was deducted a point in round four for a headbutt. Scores were 79-72, 78-73, 80-72.

In a big upset, unheralded featherweight Hiram Gallardo (7-2-1, 1 KO) scored a six round unanimous decision over previously unbeaten prospect Eduardo Nunez (10-1, 10 KOs). Nunez was deducted a point for a low blow and Gallardo closed with a flurry, but Nunez also had a big advantage in power shots. Scores were 57-56, 57-56, 58-55 for Gallardo.
