Abdul Wahid Rumored Fight With Martin Could Silence The Critics

WBA lightweight champion Abdul Wahid, formerly Gervonta “Tank” Davis (29-0, 27KO) could be fighting top contender Frank “The Ghost” Martin (18-0, 12KO) next. An argument can be made this is possibly the most dangerous challenger of Tank’s career and could momentarily silence the critics.

According to ESPN, the two fighters have agreed to terms and could fight in late spring or early summer. After defeating Ryan Garcia in April 2023, Tank couldn’t capitalize on the momentum due to out-of-the-ring issues. In January, he was elevated to super champion status by the WBA and looks to defend the title against Martin possibly in the summer.

The Ghost’s name doesn’t hold the same amount of cache as some of the bigger names in the division. Yet, he has some attributes that could be a serious problem for the Baltimore power-puncher when taking a deeper look.

A DANGEROUS CHALLENGER ON THE HORIZON

Wahid’s resume is continuously under attack as fans want to see him face the other multi-divisional champion like Shakur Stevenson, Devin Haney, and Teofimo Lopez. A fight against Martin could put some of the criticism from the boxing public to rest. Despite not having experience on the championship level, The Ghost possesses speed, footwork, athleticism, power and a decent ring IQ.

It will be hard for fans to find anyone that the WBA champion has faced with all those attributes together. Despite a subpar victory over Artem Harutyunyan in 2023, fighting the WBA champion would motivate Martin to rise to the occasion like he did against Michel Rivera in 2022.

There is a backstory that could help sell the fight as the two have shared a sparring session in the past. In classic, he said/she said format, the Michigan native claimed to have held his own against the Baltimore power puncher. Yet, Tank tells a different story in which he put a hurting on the undefeated challenger.

Wahid has been out of the ring for over a year so the fight won’t a walk in the park. The boxing community awaits for the official announcement.
