Galal Yafai Stops Sunny Edwards in Round 6
In his highly anticipated step-up fight, Olympic gold medalist Galal Yafai (9-0, 6 KO’s) easily toppled former champion Sunny Edwards (21-2, 4 KO’s) by way of sixth round TKO.
Right from the clang of the opening bell, Yafai buried Edwards in an avalanche of punches and put him on the back foot. Unfortunately for Edwards, he was never able to recalibrate the bout to start falling in his favor. As a result, Sunny Edwards found himself along the ropes and trying to weave through the blizzard of punches coming his way.
To his credit, Edwards never appeared to stop trying and did land a good measure of body shots and clean uppercuts on the chin. The trouble was his shots didn’t have enough impact to deter Yafai from attempting to steamroll him. The multitude of unfavorable elements caught up with Edwards in the sixth.
Once again caught on the ropes, absorbing a great deal of incoming fire, referee Lee Avery had seen enough and jumped in to halt the fight. In all honesty, it did not appear that Edwards needed saving. With that being said, it didn’t appear that anything about the way the fight was flowing was about to change in any way. In his post-fight interview, Edwards announced his retirement from the sport.
