Ryan Garcia Continues His Unchecked Stale Plays At Controversy
Good or bad, “King Ry” Ryan Garcia (24-1, 20 KOs) has a penchant for drawing headlines. He is a lightning rod and one of the sport’s most controversial and polarizing figures. Garcia’s latest play at stirring up the sport has him taking gratuitous shots at two-time undisputed champion Terence “Bud” Crawford. It begs the question of when he will face any true accountability, whether by choice or charge.
King Ry was a guest on the SAY CHEESE! Podcast. Along with calling himself one of the faces of the sport, the Californian took the opportunity to insult Crawford. Crawford is coming off a decision victory over Israil Madrimov to win the WBA junior middleweight title on August 3. However, Garcia was far from done and unleashed a series of insults about Bud.
“Terence Crawford really hasn’t beat nobody other than Errol Spence Jr. that went through a car crash. Other than that, who has Terence Crawford actually beat? Name one guy that he beat, other than Errol Spence, that’s well known?”
“Terence Crawford is an overhyped bum. I’m sorry; somebody’s got to say it. I’m looking into the camera. You’re an overhyped bum. You fucking suck. Stop stealing boxing money. You’re wasting everybody’s money. You’re not entertaining. You’re boring. Come see me in the ring if you think I’m talking shit.”
UNMITIGATED GALL
The highlight of Garcia’s career was his April 2024 battle against Devin Haney. Initially a majority decision win for Garcia, the fight was eventually ruled a no-contest after Garcia tested positive for PEDs.
For King Ry to say that Crawford hasn’t faced any opposition other than Spence Jr. is preposterous. Garcia has never won a world title, nor does his resume come close to that of Crawford. Yet he dares to question the resume of a two-time undisputed champion and a future Hall of Famer.
THE LARGER PICTURE
King Ry lives by the motto that any press is good press. It’s why he’s the most talked-about boxer on social media. But there comes a time when substance must matter. That’s where Garcia runs flat. He’s been all talk and all hype throughout his professional career.
Yet Garcia continues to make a series of outlandish claims without serious accountability. The relative complicity only fuels him and his antics, and that is something that needs to stop.
