Ryan Garcia and Golden Boy Continue Rocky Relationship
For fighters, outside of competing without fans, one of the biggest adjustments to get used to performing in a world post -COVID-19 lock-downs is making peace with pay cuts. Some have been willing to go along to get along. Still, others have balked at the idea of fighting with no fans or short money.
Most recently, it was Golden Boy fighter, and lightweight contender, Ryan “KingRy” Garcia (20-0, 17 KO’s) who expressed his extreme displeasure toward his proposed July 4 payday. The young Californian felt that he was being excessively low-balled and wanted more money. Ultimately, Garcia was pulled from the holiday fight card that he was supposed to be a part of.
INTERNAL BEEF
Just as KingRy was quick to voice his opinion on the matter in the public forum, so too did Oscar De La Hoya, who took to Twitter to put Garcia on blast.
Not one to take slights sitting down, after seeing what he posted, Garcia immediately fired shots back.
HARD TIMES AT GOLDEN BOY
This is not the first time that Oscar De La Hoya has had very public rifts with Ryan Garcia. In fact, last year Garcia was on the verge of parting ways entirely with Golden Boy promotions. Then, like now, KingRy was miffed about not receiving the financial compensation that he felt that he was worth. So once again, the two factions are airing their dirty laundry for the world to see.
Oscar De La Hoya has also suffered from a poor working relationship with undoubtedly his biggest star, WBA super world middleweight champion Saul “Canelo” Alvarez (53-1-2, 36 KO’s). Canelo has never come forward to outright throw De La Hoya under the bus. However, it is very evident that Alvarez is not very fond of his Hall of Fame promoter.
It will be telling to see how the present situation with Garcia resolves itself and how much longer he remains a member of the Golden Boy stable.
