George Kambosos & Devin Haney Will Meet To Crown An Undisputed Champ
After months and months of verbal warfare throughout social media, a deal has been reached between unified lightweight champion George “Ferocious” Kambosos (20-0, 10KOs) and WBC champ Devin “The Dream” Haney (27-0, 15KOs)!
This agreement signifies the marquee fight of the lightweight division. Immediately after Kambosos’ surprising upset of former unified champ Teofimo Lopez, Haney immediately turned his attention towards the Australian.
To his credit, Kambosos made it clear he was only going to be seeking the big fights at lightweight. However, as time went on and other names started to pop up in the equation, fans expressed their doubts; Haney included. At one point, it was thought that former unified champion Vasyl Lomachenko was going to get the fight, but once his home country of Ukraine went to war with Russia, he shifted his focus and elected to return home to defend his country.
THE DEAL
According to ESPN, Haney has agreed to a multi-fight deal with Top Rank and Lou Dibella. If he wins the first fight against Kambosos, a rematch will take place in Australia per a rematch clause agreement. There’s significance to what Haney is doing. Not only will he be traveling to enemy territory to attempt to become an undisputed champion, he’ll also return to Australia to defend his titles. Assuming he’s victorious of course.
First of all, you have to give everyone involved credit. The fighters said they wanted to fight and made it happen. Secondly, Haney has separated himself from the mindset of fellow young fighters who claim to want to fight the best but don’t really put the effort in on getting the best fights made. Instead, he is betting on himself as he travels abroad for potentially two life changing fights.
Also Kambosos could have taken the option of a low risk opponent for his first title defense. We seen this when former WBO welterweight champion Jeff Horn decided to face the unknown Gary Corcoran before ultimately losing to Terence Crawford. In this case, the unified champion kept his word on giving Haney the shot to crown the first men’s undisputed lightweight champion since Pernell Whitaker defeated Juan Nazario in August 1990. As confident as he was heading into his fight with Lopez, he’s equally, if not more confident that he’ll shock the world once more!
