Golovkin & Alvarez “Need Each Other” Says Loeffler

Golovkin: Surprised Canelo Said He Beat Him

A few days ago 3KingsBoxing.com talked to Golden Boy President Eric Gomez and he stated the Canelo Alvarez vs Gennady Golovkin fight would take placeMay 5th. Later that evening we reported what Oscar De La Hoya, GB CEO, told TMZ Sports (link below).

Team Golovkin says they are ready but aren’t 100 percent confident the deal is done.

“Gennady still has all his titles, he’s still the champion. He feels like the champion. He feels like if Canelo wants to be a champion he’s got to fight him again. That’s really the priority, Gennady’s expressed it. His priority is to make the fight that the fans are asking for. They want to see the rematch. It was financially a very successful event,” Golovkin’s promoter Tom Loeffler told Fight Hub.

“Both guys need each other for their career, to make those megafights,” he added. “Everyone sees the value that both guys bring to the table.”

Golovkin himself, is not 100% confident on the rematch taking place.

“I do not know if there will be a second fight – we should ask [Canelo]. I’m ready, I have my championships, I’ll be ready for May,” said Golovkin said to ESPN Deportes.

“I was surprised that he said he beat me, because he did not beat me. I do not think he felt comfortable in the ring. Sometimes the fights are more difficult, in fact I think the first one was good, but the second will be a lot more interesting.”

“I feel like I won the first fight and I’m not going to say I’m going to knock him out – because this is a tough sport, and I think it will be a tough fight for both of us,” Golovkin said.

Ofcoursethereis other fights availablefor both guys and who exactly those opponents are or could be really dependsonthe outcome of next month. Canelo’s stable mate David Lemieux is setto face WBO middleweight champion Billy Joe Saunders in Canada.

The winner of that fight can effect the likelihood of the Canelo/GGG fight getting made. A win bythe Canadian gives Golden Boy leverage in negotiations with team Golovkin and you can almost guarantee Oscar will use it.

Fans don’t care to really see either guy fight anybody else until a winner is declared between these two after such a controversial decision back in September. The card below looks a lot better to me…. I’m just saying…. Ahem.. Oscar??

Main Event: Alvarez vs Golovkin

Co-Main: Daniel Jacobs vs Saunders/Lemieux?
