Golden Boy CEO Says May 5th

Golden Boy CEO Oscar De La Hoya said earliertonightthat a rematch between his fighterCanelo Alvarez, 49-1-2, 34 KO, and middleweight king Gennady Golovkin, 37-0-1, 33 KO, will take place next May, during Cinco De Mayo weekend.

OnSeptember 16th, Canelo challenged Golovkin for the IBO, IBF, WBA, WBC middleweight titles at the T-Mobile Arena in Las Vegas.The HBO Pay-Per-View main event ended in a controversial twelve round split draw. A score of 118-110by judge Adelaide Byrdin favor of Canelocreated a s**tstormofcontroversy and a lotof social media buzz.

Earlierthisweek 3KingsBoxing.com reported (link below) that Golden Boy President, Eric Gomez said Canelo had agreedtoMay 5thfor the fight. Gomez also said the location wasn’t decided but according to De La Hoya it’llbe at T-Mobile Arena onceagain;

Part 2 In Dallas or New York?

We’re working on that for Cinco De Mayo of next year… in Las Vegas, at the same place T-Mobile. But that fight is definitely gonna happen. That’s the big fight… it’s gonna be huge. If people didn’t see the first one, wait until the second one – it’s gonna be huge,” De La Hoyasaid.

The only snafu, so to speak, is next month’s fight between WBO middleweight champion Billy Joe Saunders and challenger David Lemieux.

Lemieux is also promoted by Golden Boy. Should he win the WBO – which is the only belt Golovkindoesn’thavehecould become a bargaining chip for Golden Boy to get a Golovkin deal finalizedor possibly threaten to go aheadwith a Lemieux/Canelo bout. It has been done before….
