Gennady Golovkin a hot commodity after HBO announces departure from boxing!
Hours after HBO announced their departure from covering boxing, one of boxing’s best and biggest stars, Gennady Golovkin is being sought after by Showtime, ESPN and DAZN.
Coming off of a heartbreaking decision loss to Canelo Alvarez less than than two weeks ago, the former unified champion is looking for a new home to showcase his talents.
Let’s look at his options of the three boxing entities pursuing him.
If he were to choose to fight on ESPN, he would have a golden opportunity to become a two division world champion. You have Gilberto Ramirez, the WBO super middleweight champion, who’s mentioned Golovkin as a possible opponent before. You also have Jose Uzcategui, the newly crowned IBF super middleweight champion there as well. Both guys pose different threats, but are both winnable fights for Golovkin.
Choosing to fight on showtime opens up huge possibilities for the former champion. He could face Jermall Charlo, a guy who’s been craving a fight with Golovkin for sometime now. Also on showtime is WBC super middleweight champion David Benavidez. Jarrett Hurd and Erislandy Lara also are intriguing fights for Golovkin.
Choosing DAZN would bring a fight with Danny Jacobs in a rematch for the IBF middleweight title; assuming he gets by Sergey Dervanchenko. Demetrius Andrade would be another intriguing fight, especially if he can wrestle the WBO strap from Billy Joe Saunders. The George Groves-Callum Smith winner is also a possibility, as well as a fight with Chris Eubank Jr.
No matter where Golovkin decides to go, he’s made it clear that it’ll be on a fight to fight bases. It’ll be interesting to see what the former unified champion decides to do.
