Gennady Golovkin Admired By Mexico Faithful
Middleweight kingpin Gennady Golovkin was blown away by the respect and admiration he received in Mexico. Golovkin was in the country as a guest of WBC president Mauricio Sulaiman and made the “rounds” through Mexico City.
On Sunday he attended the NFL game betweenthe Oakland Raiders and New England Patriots and was brought onthe field at Azteca Stadium to a sustained standing ovation in which Tom Loeffler described;
“When we walked onto the field in front of 100,000 fans at Azteca Stadium and they were chanting ‘Triple G,’ it was one of those moments that you will remember foreve.”, said Loeffler.
The highlight of the visit for Golovkin was when he got to visit kids in the hospital and spend time with their familiesas he explained his visit;
“It really touched my heart to visit the children in the hospital, it was nice to bring them a special moment for a day,” said Golovkin. “I have so much respect for the doctors and nurses who treat the children and their families every day. I am just thankful to God that I am in a position to be able to visit them and bring a smile to their faces.It was a big honor to receive the official declaration from Governor Mancera, recognizing me as an official guest and International Ambassador of Mexico City. As we celebrate Thanksgiving, we should all give thanks for the blessing we have received. My trip to Mexico certainly did that for me.”
While Golovkin’s rival, Canelo Alvarez, may be a native of Mexico it didn’t stop the boxing fans from paying respect and admiration to one of the biggest in the business. In a time when fan and media bias stops some from showing absolutely any respect towards the “other side” it is refreshing to see.
