Demetrius Andrade looking to keep the pressure on for big fights
Middleweight black sheep Demetrius “Boo Boo” Andrade (30-0, 18 KO’s) is persistent, if nothing else. Despite being willingly and very openly ostracized by his fellow belt holders, the WBO World middleweight champion continues to call out the big names. Following Saul “Canelo” Alvarez’s bone-breaking performance against Billy Joe Saunders, Boo Boo crashed the post-fight presser looking for smoke. Now Andrade is back sniffing around for a fight with IBF World middleweight champion Gennady “GGG” Golovkin (41-1-1, 36 KO’s).
Traditionally, Golovkin has shown zero interest in chucking knuckles with the Rhode Island native and nothing has changed here. As reported by the Athletic, when contacted by DAZN, GGG expressed a willingness to scrap with Canelo Alvarez but not Andrade.
DIFFERENT DAY, SAME SONG
It’s really not all that surprising to hear this turn of events. Golovkin has lusted after his trilogy bout with Canelo since losing their rematch back on September 15, 2018. Sure, Golovkin is set to face WBA Super World middleweight champion Ryota Murata after each executes a tune-up match. Clearly though, GGG is so gung-ho for revenge that he’s up for risking that unification match. Obviously he does not maintain the same energy when it comes to Andrade!
It’s hard to come up with a reason outside of fear or lack of self-confidence as for why Golovkin won’t entertain an Andrade match. It’s a great match-up, it’s a unification bout and the two fighters are both Matchroom Boxing stablemates. From this angle it’s hard to think of why this showdown has not already taken place. It will be interesting to see if DAZN makes any effort to apply more pressure to Golovkin to change his tune. It will also be very revealing to see who GGG slides through the ropes to face before his unification match.
