Roman Gonzalez steps down from headlining final HBO card
Former pound for pound #1 and four-division champion Roman Gonzalez hoped to continue his comeback trail against Pedro Guevara. Unfortunately, he sustained a knee injury in training and will opt out of the December 8 bout.
Gonzalez – Guevara served as the headliner on HBO’s final card that would feature undisputed champion Cecilia Brakhus and unified middleweight champion Claressa Shields.
As a result, CEO of 360 promotions Tom Loeffler is looking to add Juan Francisco Estrada as the replacement. The former unified flyweight champion won a unanimous decision in a September card he headlined against Felipe Orucuta.
If the former champion is indeed the replacement, this will be his second fight as the mandatory for WBC champion Srisaket Sor Rungvisai. The rematch had been set for September, however, Rungvisai cancelled due to personal issues.
This is an unfortunate development for the Nicaraguan. He will continue to attempt to revitalize his career, however, the opportunity to shine on the final card of the major broadcasting network would have helped tremendously!
