Haney Opens Garcia Lawsuit; Shows Harrowing Signs of Scarring
Two-division world champion Devin “The Dream” Haney (31-0, 15 KOs, 1 NC) refuses to let things go regarding “King Ry” Ryan Garcia (24-1, 20 KOs). He’s still fuming over the events that transpired before and during their April 20 battle with Garcia in Brooklyn, New York. Haney is on a mission for some form of justice. His latest effort is to sue Garcia. However, this move on the part of The Dream comes off as useless and weak.
3kingsboxing.com has learned that on September 27, Haney filed against Ryan Garcia and his promoter, Golden Boy Promotions, seeking unspecified damages for battery, fraud, and unjust enrichment.
Haney was knocked down three times during his match with Haney. Initially, the fight was ruled in favor of Garcia by a majority decision. Eventually, it was a no-contest after Garcia tested positive multiple times for the banned substance Ostarine. Garcia was given a one-year suspension following that fight. Upon hearing of the lawsuit, he responded with the following message on social media:
A MISGUIDED MOVE
There are those in the boxing community who, in general principle, are siding with Haney. Garcia was the one who took illegal drugs and came into the fight three pounds over the contracted 140-pound weight limit. Haney was fighting against someone who entered the ring with a clear advantage.
However, Haney must look into the mirror and see where he made some missteps. He could have walked away and refused to fight when Garcia failed to make weight. At the very least, Haney should have forced Garcia to get down to as close to 140 as possible. Instead, the ego of The Dream got in his way.
Secondarily, Haney fought horribly. Garcia is not a fundamentally sound boxer. He looks to land the left hook and little else. Yet, Haney kept getting hit with left hooks throughout the contest.
It all has led to a big hit to Haney and his reputation. Will that be restored by winning a lawsuit against Garcia? No. That only comes with the two-division champion getting himself back into the ring and showing that what happened in April was an off-night. This lawsuit will not result in him regaining his mojo. Instead, it’s a sign of an emotionally and mentally scarred fighter.
