Jamel Herring and Carl Frampton Agree To Fight Terms!!!
Promoter Frank Warren has disclosed terms have been agreed towards a fight between WBO World Junior Lightweight champion Jamel Herring (21-2, 10 KOs) and former world Junior Featherweight and Featherweight champion Carl Frampton (27-2, 15 KOs). The date and venue have yet to be finalized. Although, June 13 is the targeted date with the fight happening in Frampton’s hometown of Belfast, Northern Ireland.
CHAMP AND CHALLENGER EXCITED ABOUT THE FIGHT
The 34-year-old defending champion understands the significance of the fight. But as the former Marine explained during an interview with RingTV, he feels he has what it takes to win and feels Frampton is out of his depth.
“It’s a big fight mainly due to the respect of my opponents’ name, the list of credentials he’s achieved in the sport, and the fact that he too is trying to create history on his part (as a three-division titleholder).
I still have to be smart and win rounds. Yes, I’m the bigger man and that’s definitely an advantage, but I still have to be cautious because Carl has more experience. The man isn’t a two-division world champion for nothing. But I honestly feel that he’s in way over his head, which is why I don’t mind going to Belfast.”
As far as Frampton, the 33-year-old is eager at the opportunity to become a three-time world champion in front of a hometown crowd.
THE ELEPHANT IN THE ROOM
While we know the fight is a go and will take place, there is one big elephant in the room preventing the fight from being fully stamped and concrete… the current COVID-19/coronavirus pandemic.
During his interview with RingTV, Herring expressed zero concern whatsoever about what has put a big dent in the sport.
“I’m not concerned at all. I really believe that when it’s time to kick off my full eight-week training camp, things will have cooled down. Right now I’m actually using this downtime to stay close with my family and rest my body.
Truth be told, I’m usually a homebody, so staying in doesn’t really bother me. But I hope my team (with trainer Brian “Bomac” McIntyre, pound for pound star Terence Crawford, and others) is doing the damn thing right now back in Omaha, Nebraska.”~Jamel Herring
Frampton told Belfast Live that he looks at this fight as good news for the sport.
“I’m delighted to be fighting in my city and hopefully once the coronavirus madness has all passed, we can get it sealed and have the fight.”
“It’s good to have a small bit of good news with this fight being agreed but there are more important things than boxing. People’s health is more important than me and Herring having a fight so it’s important we do this right.”~Carl Frampton
Herring – Frampton has been talked about for months and at least on paper, the fight will happen. Because of the current pandemic the world is dealing with, everything has been hit hard
