Maurice Hooker returns at welterweight with explosive win!
Not much to report here! In what appeared to be your standard jab heavy feel out first round Maurice “Mighty Mo” Hooker (27-1-3, 18 KO’s) unexpectedly dropped his opponent Uriel “Bombardero” Perez (19-5, 17 KO’s).
Even when reviewing the replays there was nothing that landed that appeared all that overtly devastating.
Yet, whether the audience or camera’s agreed with the shot or not, Perez still went down and barely beat the count. Once on his feet Perez kept complaining to the referee that his body was ailing which prompted him to stop the fight.
Hooker was moving up from super lightweight after his last fight, and first defeat, with WBC and WBO world super lightweight champion Jose Carlos Ramirez (25-0, 17 KO’s). In the fight with Ramirez, Mighty Mo lost his WBO world super lightweight title.
During the post-fight interview, Hooker repeatedly stated that he wants to move back down to 140 to get his belt back from Ramirez. However, given the immense struggle it was for Hooker to make weight it seems a curious mission to drop back down.
3kingsboxing will continue to monitor and report and the talented Maurice “Mighty Mo” Hooker.
