IBF Orders Burnett/Rodriguez

Purse Bid ordered for Bantamweight title

It seems the long wait for a world title shot for highly ranked bantamweight Emmanuel Rodriguez is finally over. The IBF has ordered a purse bid for a bout between the Puerto Rican and Ryan Burnett, who also holds the WBA ‘Super’ Title.

Rodriguez is also ranked highly by the WBC holding its #2 ranking. He also holds the #3 ranking for the IBF, with both the number one and two slots remaining vacant. It seems that Rodriguez has had quite a job trying to secure a championship fight. A fight with former title holder Lee Haskins failed to materialise, with the Briton citing a lack of venue of television coverage.

Its slated that Omar Narvaez, who was recently let down himself by WBO title holder Zolani Tete. Pulled out of several eliminator show downs, including a no show in Puerto Rico.

The bid will be held at the headquarters of the IBF on February 12that 12:00pm. My sense is that we could well end up seeing this fight as a solid undercard support to Anthony Joshua’s unification against New Zealand’s Joseph Parker. Another option could be to provide chief support to Amir Khan in Manchester on April 21st.
