Osleys Iglesias Stops Oliver Zaren; Major Super Middleweight Unification Next?
In his second duel of the year, IBF super middleweight champion Osleys “El Tornado” Iglesias (17-0, 15 KO’s) successfully kept his perfect record intact. Iglesias accomplished this feat, during his premiere title defense, by stopping a game Oliver Zaren (19-1-1, 8 KO’s) by seventh round TKO. The win also stood as Iglesias’s tenth consecutive stoppage.
As he is already a belt carrying champion, El Tornado is only interested in collecting more hardware. Thankfully, Iglesias did not choose to be ambiguous when discussing his next potential move. In fact, the IBF 168-pound champion has his eyes on the winner of the upcoming October 31 showdown between former super middleweight champion Saul “Canelo” Alvarez versus Christian Mbilli.
NO GUARANTEES
Naturally, either man would serve as a great opponent for El Tornado. Yet both bring potential complications. This is due to Iglesias and Mbilli currently being stablemates and enjoying comradery together. This means there is a solid chance that their friendship could gum the gears of making their fight reality. If Canelo wins however, this is still not a guaranteed positive outcome for El Tornado.
This is due to Canelo entering into the final act of his career. Precisely because Alvarez is staring at the exit sign of the sport, there is a ferociously strong chance that he leaves the fight with Iglesias on the shelf forever. He may not want to tangle with such a hungry and capable fighter at this point in his career. On the other hand, assuming Canelo did win and agreed to face Iglesias, then not only would he be facing a titan of the sport for great money, El Tornado could avenge his friend and stablemate in the process.
Yet, seeing as how Iglesias is going to have to wait on the winner of Alvarez vs Mbilli, then so too will we. In any case, let’s just hope that we get a solid fight announcement in short order.
