Gervonta Davis vs Isaac Cruz Set; Rolly Romero Out!

It’s been a whirlwind few days for hard-hitting unbeaten former WBA interim lightweight champion Rolando “Rolly” Romero (14-0, 12KOs). He went from preparing for the biggest fight of his career against WBA regular lightweight champion Gervonta “Tank” Davis (25-0, 24KOs) to being accused of sexual assault by numerous women.

Those accusations were enough to KO him from the opportunity of a lifetime. All the while, he has yet to be formally charged with a crime. The nature of the accusations levied against him were simply too much to overlook and allow him to fight.

With about a month before the December 5 fight, the search has been on to secure a suitable replacement for Rolando Romero. After WBC lightweight champion Devin Haney and former WBA junior welterweight champion Regis Prograis offered to step in, an opponent was finally settled on for Davis.

DAVIS’ REPLACEMENT FOUND!

The guy stepping in to replace Romero will be Isaac “Pitbull” Cruz (22-1-1, 15KOs). Obviously he’s not the guy people may have wanted to see tangle with Davis, but he’s a good fighter with a good resume. He’s also ranked #9 in the WBO, #2 in the IBF, #11 in the WBC and #7 in the WBA.

He fought former world title challenger Diego Magdaleno, stopping him in one round back in October of 2020. More recently, he defeated former WBC junior lightweight champion Francisco Vargas by unanimous decision in June.

The 23-year-old has shown throughout his career not only can he punch, but that’s he’s a good boxer as well. Some may argue, from a skill standpoint, he provides a tougher fight than Rolly. Romero is viewed as a one-trick pony that relies solely on his power.

We certainly will see if he can provide “Tank” a formidable challenge when the two collide on December 5 at the Staples Center in Los Angeles, California.
