Jack Catterall Decisions Giyasov; Secures Romero Title Fight
On the undercard of Usyk versus Verhoeven, Jack “El Gato” Catterall (33-2, 14 KO’s) defeated Shakhram “Wonder Boy” Giyasov (17-1, 10 KO’s) by unanimous decision. When all the dust settled, Catterall collected the scores of 118-109, 119-108 and 116-111. Among the spoils of war, El Gato captured the Regular WBA welterweight title.
With the win, Catterall’s future should have a bit of clarity. This is because Rolando “Rolly” Romero (17-2, 13 KO’s), the recently-elevated WBA 147-pound super champion, was ordered to face the winner of Catterall versus Giyasov within 180 days of the fight. Now that El Gato has had his hand raised, clearly he is who the WBO wants Rolly to face.
For his part, Rolly has sat idle since his May 2, 2025 win over Ryan Garcia. Romero was briefly in talks to unify with WBO welterweight champion Devin “The Dream” Haney (33-0, 15 KO’s). Unfortunately, the negotiations broke down behind the scenes with both sides stating unfavorable finances as being the leading reason. Let’s see if Team Romero can finalize the paperwork and get in the ring with Catterall.
