Hamzah Sheeraz Stops Alem Begic; Hopes for Canelo Alvarez Next
In his latest prizefight, super middleweight Hamzah Sheeraz (23-0-1, 19 KO’s) stopped Alem Begic (29-1-1, 23 KO’s) by second-round knockout. Along with Begic’s scalp, Sheeraz absorbed the vacant WBO super middleweight title to become a world champion.
With Begic, who fought like a fit divorce lawyer, out of the way, Sheeraz can focus on more lucrative and glory-filled bouts. During his post-fight interview, Sheeraz expressed interest in facing four-division champion Saul “Canelo” Alvarez (63-3-2, 39). Although, when he spoke, outside of declaring he’d definitely win, Sheeraz was largely respectful when chatting about Canelo and didn’t straight up call him out.
His manager, Spencer Brown however, was not so bashful. When Brown was afforded a few moments on the microphone, he exclusively called out the Mexican icon. If given his way, he would toss Sheeraz in the squared-circle with Alvarez in his next assignment. Sheeraz appeared to agree with his statements.
Before Alvarez can realistically make any serious plans with Sheeraz however, he has some of his own business to handle. This is because, on September 12, Canelo will test his might against WBC 168-pound champion Christian Mbilli. The date of this fight makes a Canelo fight somewhat doubtful for Sheeraz. After facing Mbilli, win, lose or draw, Alvarez is not likely to fight again before the end of the year.
Sheeraz could easily find himself sitting inactive for a year, waiting for a showdown with Canelo that very well could not materialize. Bearing this in mind, apart from Canelo and Mbilli, the last two champions are Osleys Iglesias (15-0, 14 KO’s) (IBF) and Jaime Munguia (46-2, 35 KO’s) (WBA). Both, Munguia and Iglesias, enjoyed recent wins and are seemingly available for action.
