Jermell Charlo Rekindles Old Rivalry with Erickson Lubin

If trajectories maintain their current course, super welterweight fighters Erickson “The Hammer” Lubin (26-2, 18 KO’s) and Jermell “Iron Man” Charlo (35-2-1, 19 KO’s) are headed to a rematch. Recently, the two collided via their social media accounts and each naturally did not want to give an inch. Not only this, the two gave indication they were not opposed to knuckling up again.

SOMETHING TO PROVE

A Charlo versus Lubin prizefight would serve both competitors well, at this time. Each is in need of a dance partner and both have been out of the ring for one calendar year. For his part, Charlo is in dire need of securing a solid and exciting win. In his last performance, Iron Man bored the crowd by opting to skirt around the ring with undisputed super middleweight champion Saul “Canelo” Alvarez rather than engage in a more dangerous battle to secure victory.

Not only did he lose that duel, he would enter into a career tailspin that has yet to correct itself. Once the undisputed champion of the division, Charlo first vacated his IBF title then was stripped, one by one, for all his remaining belts. This underscores why a meaningful win for Charlo is a must if he wants to continue being taken seriously in the sport.

ONE HAND WASHES THE OTHER

While Lubin is enjoying a two-fight win streak since last losing to Sebastian Fundora, The Hammer has never seen the heights of the sport that Charlo has. Nor has he ever possessed the hardware that Iron Man has. For these reasons, if nothing else, it would be a great thing for Lubin to get Charlo’s name on his resume. There is no doubt that it would also be cathartic to nab that win, secure revenge and exorcise that particular demon.

Barring his efforts versus Alvarez, Charlo generally supplies watchable and memorable outings. When it comes to Lubin, it’s well known that he stays in brutal, competitive and crowd-pleasing rumbles. Said to say, this fight makes sense for both fighters and should give the fans something to enjoy. So, let’s see if these two have some other pressing business, or if they stop talking and start signing on the dotted line.
