Cherneka Johnson Climbs Over Metcalf to Rule Bantamweight
In a one-sided mauling bout, Cherneka “Sugar” Johnson (18-2, 8 KO’s) trounced Shurretta Metcalf en route to a ninth round TKO. With the win, Johnson became the undisputed champion of the division and the first in history to hail from New Zealand. The win makes for a three-fight win streak since last losing to Elie Scotney back on June 10, 2023.
The Metcalf trouncing also stood as Sugar’s second prizefight of the year. In her post-fight interview, Johnson made zero effort to call out any specific opponent. Yet given all her hardware, finding a challenger for the #1 headband should not be hard at all. However, she did declare her desire to fight a third time this year and bestow major acclaim upon her promoter, Jake Paul.
WHAT ELSE IS IN THE HAT?
The former social media star has blitzed the boxing world, leaving many divided on his very presence in the sport. Yet, love him or hate him, Jake Paul has been part of some of the most viewed fights in the sport’s history. Said to say, there is no denying that Paul knows how to put his boxers in front of staggering audiences. So, it should be no surprise to see Johnson back before the year’s end and on a big stage. But against who, when and where is the standard boxing mystery.
