Jorge Linares and Javier Fortuna Set For Lightweight Showdown!
An intriguing lightweight bout between former champions Jorge Linares (47-5, 29KOs) and Javier Fortuna (35-2-1, 24KOs) has been finalized for August 28. The prize fight of the highly ranked contenders will take place on DAZN.
This news comes according to The Athletic.
This is no doubt a “crossroads fight” as both men look to position themselves for another title opportunity. A clash with lightweight prospect Ryan “The Flash” Garcia (20-0, 17KOs) sat at the forefront of next moves for Linares.
However, with Garcia at odds with his promoter Oscar De La Hoya and possibly looking towards a fight with Abner Mares, the three division champ takes a different route.
Fortuna was set to face another top rated contender, Luke Campbell (20-3, 16KOs) in April for the vacant WBC interim title. Unfortunately, the fight was canceled due to the COVID-19 pandemic.
Currently, the former WBA “regular” champion sits at #1 in the WBC rankings. He is hoping to parlay a win into a title fight with champion Devin Haney!
Meanwhile, Linares is currently #3, #4 and #6 by the WBA, WBC and WBO respectively. A win for either man will surely put them into position for another big fight!
