Jose Benavidez believes David Benavidez vs Canelo is only a matter of time

It is no secret that Saul “Canelo” Alvarez (55-1-2, 37 KO’s) has made a huge impression on the 168-pound division. First and foremost, he has already captured the WBA Super and WBC World Super Middleweight titles. Beyond becoming a champion, he has brought a great deal of attention and potential money to the table as well. Of course, all the boxers in the division want a piece of the redhead. A bout with Canelo will get great media attention, is a potential historical event and would likely be a career-high payday. For these reasons and more, David “Red Flag” Benavidez (23-0, 20 KO’s) and his father would love to take the challenge.

Even while Benavidez and his father/trainer Jose Benavidez would jump at the opportunity, they know that they have to wait. One of the more vexing reasons that Benavidez will have to play the waiting game is because he is no longer champion. For the second time, Red Flag lost his title outside the ring. The first time was due to a PED violation. Next, the most recent incident, in his last outing, he lost his title on the scale. In fact, the vacant WBC belt that Canelo usurped was his former title. Had he not lost it, he would already be one of the 168-pound champions that Alvarez has vowed to face.

PATIENCE IS KEY!

Minus the WBC belt, and the bargaining power that it holds, Jose Benavidez is not worried about the situation. As he views the current super middleweight landscape, he cannot see how Alvarez can avoid a showdown with his son. Sure, the redhead has a number of bouts in front of him. There is not denying this. However, Jose Benavidez feels as though Canelo will quickly exhaust his list of viable opponents. When this happens, as he told to Behind the Gloves, it will be Red Flag’s time to shine.

“Who else is there at 168 that can give Canelo problems or David problems now? So, at the end of the day, I think this is the fight that is going to have to happen. Canelo, after he does all his fights he is going to run out of fighters. We are going to have to fight! By that time, it will be a mandatory, I think…but I think right now, who is in the mix right now is David Benavidez, Canelo Alvarez, [Jermall] Charlo, [Daniel] Jacobs and maybe [Billy Joe] Saunders if he stays at that weight. But that what’s up there right now I believe.”

FATHER TIME IS UNDEFEATED!

Not only is Jose Benavidez confident that they will get the super fight, he thinks that they could get Canelo at the perfect time.

“Canelo is a really good fighter, he is king at 168! A lot of people might say that I am crazy. Canelo, he is the best, he is the king. But you got to remember he has been fighting a lot. You know his body can only give so much. And who is he fighting right now? That’s why he doesn’t want to fight David Benavidez, because David is strong and bigger than him, you know? So, I think that would definitely be good and the fight is coming. Now I can see it even better, I can picture that coming soon. Two or three more fights with Canelo fighting all these guys and then he is going to have to defend his title. So, go ahead, beat everybody and we’ll come after you, get all those belts. We’ll come and get em!”
