Amir Khan Robbed At Gun Point In London
Any enthusiasts of the Sweet Science understand the dangers fighters take. Boxer put their lives on the line whenever they step in the ring. Unfortunately, that aspect of danger carries itself beyond the ropes. Such was the case for one-time unified junior welterweight champ Amir Khan (34-6, 21 KOs).
On April 18, Khan went to social media to announce he was the victim of a robbery at gunpoint in East London. The 35-year-old was out with his wife, Faryal Makhdoom, when they were approached at gunpoint by two men who took his watch.
Khan is coming off a six-round TKO loss to bitter rival Kell Brook on February 19. In attendance for Conor Benn’s second-round stoppage win over Chris van Heerden on April 16, Khan is contemplating whether to carry on with his career or to hang up the gloves and call it a day. If he decides to fight again, there are talks of a rematch with Brook or a possible fight with Benn.
THE DANGERS OF CELEBRITY
Hugely popular in his native England, Khan is more than just a fighter. He’s been in the spotlight since winning a silver medal at the 2004 Olympics at age 17. Given his trials and tribulations in boxing and his appearance on the UK celebrity show “I’m A Celebrity… Get Me Out Of Here”, Khan is a mainstream figure and a wealthy one at that.
So, more than most, he is wide open to getting caught up and susceptible to someone looking to take something from him. The ugly reality is that Khan is an open target. If anything, this incident shows how vulnerable a figure like Khan is, in or out of the ring. Fortunately, a watch was the only thing that was taken. We at 3Kings Boxing are glad that Khan and his wife are safe and sound.
