Sergey Kovalev breaks his silence on being charged with felony assault
Sergey Kovalev faces a maximum sentence of four years in prison. He recently issued a statement hoping fans do not jump to any conclusions.
Kovalev was arrested June 9 in Big Bear Lake, California in connection to the alleged incident. A woman alleges he punched her in the face according to San Bernardino county online court records.
Also according to online records, a $50,000 bond released him. On August 27, he pleaded not guilty to assault likely to cause great bodily injury.
TMZ reported that the woman rejected Kovalev’s advance which upset him and that’s when he allegedly struck her. As a result, breaking her nose, giving her a concussion and a displaced disk in her neck.
Kovalev’s rematch with WBO light heavyweight champion Eleider Alvarez will still go on as planned February 2.
He is due back in court on March 14 for a preliminary hearing.
