Hiroto Kyoguchi to Fight Esteban Bermudez June 10 in Mexico
Matchroom Boxing has announced that WBA Super world junior flyweight champ Hiroto Kyoguchi (15-0, 10 KOs) will face WBA Regular 108 pound champ Esteban Bermudez (14-3-2, 10 KOs) on June 10 at the Arena Coliseo in Mexico City, Mexico. The bout will air live on the DAZN streaming service.
IT’S ABOUT DAMN TIME
This fight was long in the making. Ordered by the WBA in June 2021, both fighters will be coming off lengthy layoffs. Kyoguchi’s last bout happened in March 2021, when he scored a fifth-round TKO over Axel Aragon Vega. Bermudez was last in action in May 2021 when he scored an upset sixth-round TKO win over previous WBA Regular champ and highly-regarded Carlos Canizales.
AN INTERESTING SUBPLOT
With Kyoguchi being a two-division world champion and more of a known quantity in the lower-weight divisions, one would think this fight would happen either in his country of Japan or in a neutral locale. But for the 28-year-old, fighting in Mexico is part and parcel of his quest to become more of a known figure in North America. It’s also the byproduct of signing a promotional deal with Matchroom in December 2020. But he relishes fighting on the road and hopes a win will be the springboard to a unification fight later this year.
READY TO SHOW AND PROVE
“It was always my dream to fight in Mexico because the Mexican style has influenced me a lot. It is a great opportunity to show my boxing in that country against a rival like Esteban Bermudez. Regarding the unification fight, I think it is my mission as absolute champion.”
Hiroto Kyoguchi, WBA Super junior flyweight champion
Bermudez has been chomping at the bit for this fight and claims to have studied Kyoguchi extensively. The 26-year-old says he sees flaws in his upcoming opponent and plans to expose him on fight night.
“He is a very good champion, but kind of weak because of too many injuries. I’ve been waiting a year for him to fight me! I live from boxing, and I’ve needed this fight to happen for a long time. I’ve been at training camp for this fight, and he is coming to my hometown; the title is going to still be here.”
Esteban Bermudez, WBA Regular junior flyweight champion
Kyoguchi is known for his in-your-face style. He’s not one to take you out with one punch. Instead, he wears you down and beats you up. At his best, Bermudez combines boxing skills combined with explosive power. He overwhelmed Canizales with hard shots from distance, at mid-range, and up close. On paper, Kyoguchi-Bermudez has the potential to be a very entertaining scrap.
