Vasiliy Lomachenko’s Path to Undisputed Goes Through Kambosos
When next at bat, three-division champion Vasiliy “Hi-Tech” Lomachenko (17-3, 11 KO’s) will face the challenge of IBO lightweight champion George Kambosos for the vacant IBF title. Yet, when they clash, there is a high likelihood that WBC 135-pound champion “Fearless” Shakur Stevenson (21-0, 10 KO’s) will be on his mind. This is because Top Rank ring master Bob Arum, according to Sky Sports, indicated that he’d love to pair the two provided that Lomachenko gets past Kambosos unscathed.
“Hopefully Lomachenko is able to rise to the occasion and win the title, because there’s no fighter that I enjoy watching more than Lomachenko. He’s a really great technician. I have another fighter, Shakur Stevenson, who is also a great technician. So, if Lomachenko wins and Shakur, who is scheduled to fight in July, wins, then for the fall to do a Lomachenko-Shakur fight. Every serious boxing fan will be watching that in awe between two great technicians fighting for a unified title.”
ANOTHER SHOT AT THE TOP
Provided that Loma does prevail over Kambosos, which he is favored to do, he will fall right into another big fight armed with the IBO strap. Naturally, that duel would come against the aforementioned Shakur Stevenson. Even better though, if Loma can once again topple Stevenson, not only will Loma take possession of the additional WBC belt, there is only one other title holder in the division.
That remaining boxer is none other than WBA 135-pound champion Abdul “Tank” Wahid (Gervonta Davis). Obviously, beating Stevenson and Tank would net Lomachenko the IBF, WBA and WBC titles, while the WBO remains unclaimed. At the same time however, just like in his upcoming duel with Kambosos, the vacant WBO title could very well be tossed into either the Tank or Stevenson duels.
For these reasons, this upcoming skirmish in The Outback between Kambosos and Hi-Tech has a great deal of new weight added. Will the decorated veteran pull out another thrilling win with all the fantastic incentives attached? Hypothetically, Lomachenko is three fights away from becoming undisputed at 135. But can he get across the line intact? Will he beat Kambosos in his own backyard? Stay tuned to 3Kings Boxing to find out!
