Teofimo Lopez Sr. predicts easy victory over Lomachenko
When it comes to father and son boxing duo Teofimo Lopez Sr. and IBF world lightweight champion Teofimo “El Brooklyn” Lopez (15-0, 12 KO’s), there is absolutely no lack of confidence. Ever since the pair stepped on the mainstream boxing stage, they have told all who will listen that they are the next big thing.
El Brooklyn added a tremendous amount of validity to his claim after knocking out former lightweight champion Richard “RC” Commey (29-3, 26 KO’s) in the second round of their December 14, 2019 title fight. Now that his upcoming prizefight with unified lightweight champion Vasiliy “Hi-Tech” Lomachenko (14-1, 10 KO’s) appears to be back on track, Team Lopez is in a prime position to knock off the man widely perceived as the top dog of the division.
GOING TO UNIFY EASILY
Being no stranger to making larger-than-life predictions and statements, Lopez Sr. was certainly not at a loss for words in this scenario. On the one hand, Lopez Sr. is happy that his son is getting the opportunity. Yet, at the same time, the confident chief second was anything but bashful when he revealed to EsNews how he thought the upcoming fight would play out.
“To tell you the truth, the fight with Richard Commey concerned me more than the fight with Lomachenko because Richard Commey, at least he had a puncher’s chance against my son. And we took care of that business. We took care of that situation and now we are going to have an easier fight with Vasiliy Lomachenko.”
“And people are always going to talk cause we are going to make it look so easy. We are going to make that fight look so easy that the next day, everybody is going to say that Lomachenko was already done, that he was too old, that those four hundred amateur fights that he had in the amateurs caught up to him. You know, it’s always going to be something. You know we are just going to keep beating up whoever they put in front of us.” ~Teofimo Lopez Sr.
NEW FACE OF TOP RANK
Going quite a few steps further, Lopez Sr. is adamant in his belief that once El Brooklyn overtakes Hi-Tech in the ring, it will be the first step in becoming the new face of Top Rank promotions.
“Bob [Arum] knows we’re real! Bob knows that we are going to change Top Rank, we’re going to help Top Rank. I told Bob Arum from the beginning when we beat Lomachenko, you’re going to have your next Manny Pacquiao. The company does not need a two million dollar fighter. This guy has been with the company for seven years! What has he done for the company? Nothing!”
“Two million dollars a fight, get out of here! Bob Arum needs another 20/50 million dollar fighter and we’re giving him that. And Teofimo is going to be the face of boxing and everybody in the world is talking about Teofimo Lopez with fifteen fights!” ~Teofimo Lopez Sr.
Obviously, this is a rather tall order that the father is making out for son to fill. If El Brooklyn is able to best Loma in grand fashion, then this will all be looked back on very favorably. However, if the IBF champion falls short of his goal in any way, he is going to have an awful lot of crow to munch on!
