Teofimo Lopez Racing Terence Crawford for Undisputed Status

Normally when Team Lopez speaks about a fighter, they are direct and straight to the point. This was not necessarily the case in a recent interview with SecondsOut. Here, Teofimo “Take Over” Lopez’s (16-1, 12 KO’s) father and trainer, Teofimo Lopez Sr., took the time to give some updates on his son. In doing so, the colorful personality began outlining a number of their goals and intentions.

While discussing the subject of moving up, Senior also re-established their desire to become undisputed at 140. So, without saying his name, the verbose trainer insinuated that Lopez would like to fight undisputed super lightweight champion Josh “The Tartan Tornado” Taylor (19-0, 13 KO’s) sooner rather than later. Yet, Senior accomplished this by bringing up the would-be bout for undisputed between Errol Spence Jr and Terence Crawford.

“We still got that three-fight deal with Top Rank; one ESPN and two pay-per-view fights. So we are going to try to make the three fights happen by the end of the year. But if it doesn’t, then we’ll still get in at least two and take over the 140 weight division. Hopefully we do it before Crawford does it with Errol Spence because it’s a competition! It’s like we were undisputed champions at 135, we want to do it at 140 and we want do it before Crawford does it and that’s what we are going for.”

IS THE TIME RIGHT?

It’s anyone’s guess as to why Senior talked all around the subject of Josh Taylor without ever actually bringing him up. Who knows? Yet, being that Taylor owns all the belts at 140, the only way that Take Over can become undisputed at all, let alone quickly, is going through the Tartan Tornado. This seems like a dubious endeavor though, as Taylor has never shown any interest in fighting Lopez.

At the same time however, Taylor is coming off an exceedingly poor performance versus Jack Catterall. Quite a few boxing fans believe that Taylor actually lost that bout and was awarded victory by way of crooked scorecards. So much so that an investigation was launched into the scoring of the prizefight. So maybe a big money, high profile fight against a guy that Taylor feels he beat may be just what the doctor ordered. Regardless of how this plays out, 3Kings Boxing will be in the scene to report the news!
