Abner Mares Still Stalking Ryan Garcia Fight
When it comes to rising lightweight boxer Ryan “KingRy” Garcia (20-0, 17 KO’s), there is no question that a number of fighters would like to face him in the ring. However, as 3kingsboxing.com recently reported, it appears that former three division champion Abner Mares (31-3-1, 15 KO’s) is attempting to leap to the head of the pack.
Realizing that boxing is a business, rather than keep jaw-jacking about wanting the bout, Mares has instructed his team to drum up a legitimate proposal. Once drawn up and presented to Team Garcia, Mares is fairly confident that he and KingRy will be able to come to a mutually beneficial agreement.
“I spoke to his people. Well I haven’t directly spoken to Golden Boy, but Lupe has and it’s in the works. We are working on it, we are just waiting on a proposal basically. And hopefully it happens, so the people that say that it’s all a bluff, it’s all social media beef, it’s not! It’s really in the works. We’re talking about a possible match against Ryan Garcia and that’s what it is.”
UNUSUAL STIPULATIONS
Throughout this process, Mares has been made painfully aware that he is the older fighter. For this reason, some believe that he is ripe for the plucking. Forcefully quelling this belief constitutes a large portion of Mares’ desire to secure this bout. Although, there is another more personal reason intertwined with all the professional and economic motivators for chasing the Californian kid.
During a recent session going live on InstaGram, Mares revealed that his own daughters were huge fans of Ryan Garcia. Of course they want their father to win, but the fact that they have a soft spot for Garcia has provided Abner Mares with a potent motivation. And out of this unique dynamic, Mares intends to slip a very unique stipulation into his fight proposal.
“I just wanted to address this and say, because I know that people have been coming at me hard saying that I’m going to get knocked out by Ryan and that he is better than me. [replying to his daughter] That is wrong, babe…My little daughter, both of these girls are, believe it or not, they are in love with Ryan Garcia. It is what it is, he is an InstaGram sensation. He is a good looking kid, but at the end of the day, fighting is different.
…This is what I am going to do, if I’m going to fight Ryan Garcia and if he is watching, or if you guys share this, or he finds out about it. Ryan, if I beat you, and when I beat you, you have to be my daughter’s Chambelan [chaperon]. You got to be my daughter’s Chambelan for her Quinceanera [sweet sixteen], next year. She turns fifteen next year and you got to walk out and be her Chambelan bro, that’s what you’re going to have to do!”
KEEPING THE FAITH
Mares understands that at the moment, Garcia’s star is burning rather bright and has left him with a number of options. So luckily, whether it turns out to be good news or bad, Mares is confident that he will have some form of definitive news by the end of the week.
“So the fight, it’s in the process, it’s in the works. I made my call, they are negotiating, that’s what it is basically. And hopefully, I hope that I find out hopefully by the end of this week I’m sure it’ll be announced. But you know, it’s a lot to it. It’s not just wanting the fight, it’s the venue, when is boxing coming back, what network, so there is a lot.”
