Mares Eyeing IBF Champion Jo Jo Diaz’s Belt
It’s no secret that former three-division world champion Abner Mares (31-3-1, 15 KO’s) is gunning for a fight with lightweight boxer and social media sensation Ryan “KingRy” Garcia (20-0, 17 KO’s). Mares has taken to social media a number of times to let it be known that he has instructed his team to do their best to secure that fight next.
However, in the event that the fight with Garcia does not materialize, Mares definitely has his eyes on more than one option. If not Garcia, Mares has let it be known that he would love the chance to put his paws on IBF world Super Featherweight champion Joseph “Jo Jo” Diaz (31-1, 15 KO’s).
MARES EYEING JO-JO DIAZ’S BELT
Thankfully for the fans, Diaz has also expressed interest in squaring off against Mares. With both sides already showing a willingness and desire to go toe-to-toe, the likelihood of a prizefight being put together increases dramatically. During a recent session going live on his InstaGram account, Mares let the IBF champ know that he definitely had him on the radar.
“Also, Jo Jo Diaz proposed a fight toward my company, myself. You know he wants to fight and that’s another fight that I am interested in. Hopefully we make that happen, and all these fights are good. So regardless if the Ryan Garcia fight doesn’t happen, I’m open for Jo Jo Diaz because he holds the IBF.”
If actually penned, Mares v Diaz should make for one fun, action-packed bout! So for the time being, the boxing world will have to wait and see what happens with negotiations between Team Garcia and Team Mares. Yet, at the end of the day, we can’t go wrong with either bout.
