Julio Cesar Martinez makes his first title defense against Jay Harris!
Matchroom Boxing has announced that Julio Cesar Martinez (15-1 12 KOs) will return to the ring on Feb. 29 to make the first defense of the WBC World Flyweight title against the undefeated #7 ranked Jay Harris (17-0, 9 KOs) at Ford Center at The Star in Frisco, Texas.
The bout will be aired live on DAZN streaming service.
This will be a quick turnaround for Martinez who won the vacant WBC 112-pound title on Dec. 20 with an entertaining 9th round stoppage win over Cristofer Rosales. The 24-year-old from Mexico City has created quite a buzz from followers of the lower-ranked divisions due to his action-packed and power-punching style.
Known as “El Rey”, Martinez fights with an unbridled ferocity reminiscent of the Hall of Fame great, Roberto Duran. The newly crowned champ is excited about returning the ring.
“I’m so happy to be back fighting so soon, especially on such a huge show in Frisco. It was a special moment become World Champion, but now I must continue to work hard and defend my title with honor for my people of Mexico.”
The 29-year-old Commonwealth and EBU champion is excited at the opportunity to become a world champion. A boxer-puncher from Swansea, Wales, Harris is eager to score what would be considered a size-able upset.
“I want to say a big thanks to Matchroom and MTK Global for giving me the opportunity to fight for the WBC title in Frisco on such a big event. Julio is a great young fighter but I am feeling in the form of my life and this gives me the opportunity to shock the world.”
Based on styles, Martinez – Harris has the look of a fight that can’t help but be exciting. Additionally, given that it takes place on the under-card of contest between Mikey Garcia – Jessie Vargas, don’t be surprised if these two men steal the show.
