Andrew Moloney TKO’s Elton Dharry in Nine!
WBA #1 ranked super flyweight Andrew Moloney defeated fifth ranked WBA Super Flyweight Elton Dharry by ninth round TKO. The victory earns him the interim WBA World Super Flyweight title.
Fighting on home turf, Moloney (21-0, 14 KO) was the heavy favorite going in. However, the durable and rugged Dharry (24-6-1, 14 KO) would exceed expectations, providing a tougher than expected battle.
THE BREAKDOWN
The fight was an even contest in the early rounds. Moloney boxed on the outside behind the jab while his opponent applied steady pressure.
The fifth saw some shaky moments for the Australian. Dharry hurt him with a right uppercut midway through the round, causing him to spend the rest of the round in retreat to gather himself and recover. Upon observation of the replay, a knockdown should have been called as the Aussie’s knee touched the canvas.
Finding his bearings in round six, the 28-year-old went back to work as he fought more conservatively. Bad swelling developed on the right eye of Dharry. Even with impaired vision, the 33-year-old Brooklyn-based Ghanian would continue to fight hard.
Round eight was a dominant round for Moloney as Dharry’s right eye was almost swollen shut. After almost stopping the bout at the beginning of the round, the ringside physician would judge the eye damage too severe to continue. The contest would come to a halt at the start of round nine.
After the bout, Moloney called for a fight against WBA champion Kal Yafai.
“Bring on Yafai. I’ve been chasing him for a long time now. Let’s make it happen.”
While he may want Yafai next, it will not happen anytime soon. The WBA champion is currently in negotiations to face WBC champion Juan Francisco Estrada in a super flyweight unification showdown in early 2020!
