Jermall Charlo prepares to face Matt Korobov instead of Willie Monroe Jr

On the afternoon of December 15, WBC President Mauricio Sulaiman announced VADA alerted the WBC of an “adverse finding” in one of Monroe’s pre-fight drug tests.

3KingsBoxing has learned the opponent who will step-up to the plate as Monroe’s replacement is ten year veteran Matt Korobov (28-1, 14KOs). He was already on schedule to face Juan DeAngel in an eight-round bout on the Charlo – Monroe Jr. under-card.

An official ruling on how the WBC would handle the state of the Charlo – Monroe fight was set for Monday. However, sources at RingTv confirmed Korobov as the opponent December 22.

While the Russian veteran’s professional career may not have paned out in comparison to his impressive amateur career, he is still a very serviceable opponent.

The news of adverse finding’s in Monroe’s pre-fight drug test is, of course, a surprise.

Charlo vs Korobov is the main event of a Dec. 22 triple-header that is to air on Fox Sports.

This card is the beginning of a four-year multiple platform deal between PBC, the Fox broadcast network, Fox Sports 1, Fox Deportes as well the creation of Fox Sports/PBC pay-per-view.
