Moses Itauma Gets His Long-Awaited Test Against Filip Hrgovic

A significant portion of the boxing community has long demanded that British heavyweight prospect Moses Itauma be tested against elite-level opposition. On August 29, they will finally get their wish as Itauma faces top contender Filip Hrgovic.

Itauma (14-0, 12 KOs) will meet Hrgovic (20-1, 15 KOs) at the O2 Arena in London, England. Hrgovic has made it clear that he has little respect for the rising British star. He insists that he will expose a fighter he believes is not yet ready for the heavyweight division’s upper echelon.

PUTTING THINGS IN PERSPECTIVE

Itauma, however, appears unfazed by the verbal attacks. During an interview with Queensberry Promotions, the hard-hitting southpaw dismissed Hrgovic’s trash talk.

“The thing is, he doesn’t have that energy when I’m with him. He doesn’t have that energy when we’re face-to-face. So, I don’t know. It’s just all of a sudden, he leaves the room and he’s got confidence. […] If you really asked him, would he rather fight somebody else? I think he’d say, ‘yes’.”

The spotlight will undoubtedly be on Itauma. Since his amateur days, the 21-year-old has been touted as not only the future of British boxing but potentially the future of the heavyweight division.

That praise is understandable considering his exceptional physical gifts and the dominant fashion in which he has dismantled every opponent placed in front of him as a professional.

Yet Hrgovic represents an entirely different level of competition. A world-class, top ten heavyweight, he brings a dangerous blend of power, strength, durability, and experience that Itauma has not previously encountered. Those attributes could pose serious challenges, particularly if the fight extends into the later rounds.

WHAT’S ON THE LINE

This matchup will serve as a measuring stick for Itauma’s future. A convincing victory by Itauma would strengthen the belief that he possesses the tools to become a major force in the heavyweight division for years to come. A disappointing performance, however, could reveal that the hype surrounding him has outpaced reality. Either way, August 29 promises to provide the answers boxing fans have been waiting for.
