Jaime Munguia Flagged for PED Use Against Bruno Surace

One-time WBO junior middleweight champion Jaime Munguia is under fire for failing a Performance Enhancing Drug test. The boxing news media reported on Munguia’s failed test following a rematch win over Bruno Surace on May 3.

Munguia was on track for a big Mexico vs Puerto Rico rivalry showdown with Edgar Berlanda. However, he suffered a brutal knockout by Surace in December 2024. What made that loss so bad was the fact the Frenchman only had four knockouts at the time.

Many thought Munguia’s all-out-war style had finally taken a toll on his ability to take a punch. But, his needing a PED to defeat a low-level fighter like Surace screams he may want to think about leaving the sport.

In fairness, the Mexican has fought some solid names like Gary Sullivan, Liam Smith, a battle-worn Sergiy Derevynchenko, and Erik Bazinyan. But in each fight, Munguia’s lack of head movement made him an easy target.

He will be sidelined for a while as the governing sanctioning bodies conduct their investigation. It will be interesting to see what reason they will use for the failed test results.
