Cherneka Johnson Wins Majority Decision Over Nina Hughes
In her latest call to duty, WBA bantamweight champion Nina Hughes (6-1, 2 KO’s) fought and lost to Cherneka Johnson (16-2, 6 KO’s) by way of majority decision. This obviously was a tremendous win for Johnson who is coming off a unanimous decision loss to Ellie Scotney back on June 10, 2023.
During the opening rounds of this contest, the shorter Hughes successfully attacked from a low crouching position, pumping her jab and shooting straight punches down the pipe. The champion’s offensive shot selection and volume presented a notable hurdle for the game challenger.
As the rounds wore on however, Johnson used her size, length and Michael Myers-like style to constantly walk down and mentally pressure Hughes. By the time that the duel arrived to the later rounds, weariness and a lack of answers had the champ somewhat flustered.
This culminated in Hughes retreating and largely playing keep away during the tenth and final round. Ultimately, when the cards were read, Johnson prevailed by way of majority decision to the tune of 95/95, 96/94, 98/92. In a very strange anomaly, when the scorecards were read, it was initially announced that the champion Hughes had won. Then, after a few long moments, the true winner, Cherneka Johnson, was awkwardly announced as the actual victor.
