Fast Rising prospect Virgil Ortiz Jr continues to roll

On the Jaime Munguia vs Takeshi Inoue under-card, fast-rising welterweight prospect Vergil Ortiz Jr (12-0, 12KO) continued his march up the boxing ranks as he broke down and eventually, took apart Jesus Valdez (23-5-1, 12KO) in five rounds of scheduled a 10-round contest.

The 20 year-old Ortiz began this fight aggressively pressing the action against the smaller, yet more experienced Valdez. Through the first four rounds, the 5’10” Ortiz mixed his attack to the head and body. For his part, Valdez proved tough. However, Ortiz was clearly outgunning him.

Starting the fifth round, Ortiz really stepped up the intensity. The effect of the punches start to really show on the face of his opponent. The cut over his left eye and blood coming from his nose were clear evidence. Valdez was starting to take a beating.

At the end of the fifth round, the ringside physician stepped in to observe the cuts and physical condition of the underdog. He decided enough was enough and called a halt to the contest.

Having never been beyond three rounds in his previous 11 fights, this one was a decent test for Ortiz. Though never a serious threat, Valdez proved to be tough; forcing his opponent to put in a little work before eventually being broken down.

A nice overall win for Vergil Ortiz Jr and it’s onward and upward in his career!
