Oscar De La Hoya Roasts Canelo For Being a Cherry Picker
Like him or not, there is no denying that Oscar De La Hoya was a fighter’s fighter. This is why his resume totes names such as Ike Qurtey, Fernando Vargas, Bernard Hopkins, Shane Mosley, Tito Trinidad, Floyd Mayweather Jr and Manny Pacquiao. A roster this hefty lends credibility when De La Hoya charges super middleweight champion Saul “Canelo” Alvarez (62-2-2, 39 KO’s) with being more of a synthetic fighter than a sensational one.
In his latest segment of Clap Back Thursday, the Golden Boy Promotions head honcho threw a few more coals on his raging rivalry with Alvarez. Here he ridiculed his prizefight with Edgar Berlanga and the overall event. De La Hoya maintained that Canelo has made a practice of taking the path of least resistance when scheduling dance partners. Is he wrong though?
“Look at the Canelo fight. Berlanga went on a month-long celebration because he lasted twelve rounds?! He lost and acted like it was a good thing . . . Canelo is the most boring, but most popular boxer today. Just like Kim Kardashian who everyone wants to be like, she has no personality yet makes tons of money! So essentially, Canelo is king of the fattiest, sloppiest, nastiest BBL era!”
POKE IN THE EYE
It would be a fool’s errand to argue that Alvarez is devoid of skill and ability. Not only is the Mexican phenomenon immensely talented, he has visibly matured and drastically developed over the years. Switching from his tricky, slick defense to thunderous offense is legitimately fun television. At the same time, Canelo has been king of catchweights; facing aged fighters and side-stepping duels that fans clamor for.
Currently, for example, a huge segment of the boxing world would love to see Canelo face two-time super middleweight champion David Benavidez. And truth be known, no one wanted the Berlanga spat and easily would have swapped it out for an upgrade. Benavidez or two-time undisputed champion Terrance Crawford would have been happily accepted.
Ultimately though, this latest episode is not even likely to goad a response out of Canelo. And if De La Hoya couldn’t do it as his former promoter, he certainly will not influence how and who Alvarez selects to fight now. So, for the time being, let’s just enjoy the chuckles and see what the Golden Boy and Canelo will announce next.
