Diego Pacheco Looking Forward to Clash with Stablemate Edgar Berlanga
Diego Pacheco (17-0, 14 KOs) and Edgar “The Chosen One” Berlanga (20-0, 16 KOs) are two up-and-coming fighters in the super middleweight division. Both are part of the Matchroom Boxing roster and could be on a path to an eventual showdown. After parting ways with Top Rank, Berlanga signed a multi-fight deal with Matchroom in February 2023.
Pacheco is set for a ten-round contest against Jack Cullen on February 12 in Liverpool, England. Speaking to the UK source, iFL TV, Pacheco was asked about a potential fight with Berlanga.
“I know for sure that fight is going to happen down the line. He just signed to Matchroom, I’m signed with Matchroom. There’s no reason it shouldn’t happen now.
I just wish him the best. Wish him to keep winning, and I’m going to keep winning, and eventually that fight is going to happen, and it’ll be a really big fight.”
SHOWING PLENTY OF PROMISE
Observers are excited about their futures. Ranked ninth by the WBO, Pacheco is 3kingsboxing.com’s Prospect of the Year for 2022. At 6’4, the 22-year-old is tall for the division. Despite his height, he’s a well-rounded fighter capable of fighting in close, mid-range, or at a distance.
Berlanga is currently ranked fourth by the IBF and WBO. He may not have the range of Pacheco but is equal to him in the power department.
TIMING IS EVERYTHING
Pacheco also told iFL he’s optimistic a match with Berlanga could occur toward the end of the year. But Berlanga has yet to have his debut fight for Matchroom. So don’t expect to see the two hard-hitters in the ring against each other this year.
But as Pacheco noted, the key is for both of them to stay on course and continue to pile up the victories. Matchroom chairman Eddie Hearn understands the game of building two fighters up for a big-money matchup. That is certainly possible for Pacheco and Berlanga.
